Date: Friday 20 September, 2013, 15:00-17:00 Place: JAIST, Collaboration room 6 (I-57g) (Access: http://www.jaist.ac.jp/english/location/access.html) Speaker: Professor Andrej Bauer (University of Ljubljana, Slovenia) Title: A higher inductive construction of the real numbers Abstract: Homotopy type theory [1] is a foundation of mathematics based on Martin-Löf type theory extended with the Univalence axiom and higher inductive types. The latter allow us to present mathematical objects as inductive types generated by point and path constructors. For instance, the circle is represented by a type with a point and a loop satisfying the "circle induction" principle. In the first part I shall review higher inductive types. In the second part of the talk I shall look at a higher inductive construction of real numbers. Ordinary higher inductive types do not seem to suffice -- instead we have to use a higher inductive-inductive definition which simultaneously constructs the reals and a proximity relation on them. We thus obtain a type of real numbers which satisfies a principle of "real induction". We can prove properties of reals by induction! From a logical point of view the construction is interesting because it avoids the axiom of choice, impredicativity (powersets), and excluded middle. Nevertheless, the resulting theory still allows us to develop the basics of real analysis as usual. After having done all the formal work, an application to a real world fixed point theorem (due to Fora) is given in several steps going to the formalization and modification process to finally obtain new constructive results. （２）話者：横山啓太（北陸先端科学技術大学院大）題目：Ramsey's theorem, its iteration and their strength 概要： In this talk, I will introduce several versions of iterated Ramsey's theorem, and study the strength of them. The position is in the field of semantics of programming languages and process algebras, within the project "Modular operational semantics: a bialgebraic approach", funded by the Polish National Science Center. The applicants should have (or be close to completion of) a PhD degree in Mathematics or Computer Science, and be interested in topics such as semantics of programming languages, process algebra, formal methods, and/or category theory. The position is available from November 2013, but the starting date may be postponed on request of a suitable candidate. In addition, interested candidates are invited to apply for a postdoctoral fellowship at the Warsaw Center of Mathematics and Computer Science (http://www.wcmcs.edu.pl/node/41), with the rather short deadline of *** October 15th, 2013 ***. Pluralism and Universalism in Logic Pierre Wagner 論理のPluralismとＵｎｉｖｅｒｓａｌｉｓｍの考え方とその問題点などを検討します。また、近年の論理学におけるこれに関係する動きについても議論します。例えば様々な部分構造論理や様相論理、動的論理系論理について論理的多元論の立場でとらえる考え方とそうでない立場でとらえる考え方について検討します。最近ののＵｎｉｖｅｒｓａｌ logicの運動についても批判的観点も含めて議論します。 2. The normativity of the Ordinary -Performative Utterrances and Social Reality The question of performative utterances seems inseparable from a reflection on social normativity, especially on the transgression of norms implied in Austin’s thorough study of the failures (abuses and misfires) of the performative, in /How to do things with words/. Austin’s discovery of speech acts rests ultimately on thought about law and normativity. It is a well known fact that H. L. A. Hart was a member of the seminar, held just after the war, in which Austin presented the theory of speech acts. Moreover, Reinach’s theory of social acts, an early form of the theory of speech acts, was developed in a legal context. Reinach’s work anticipates Austin’s so closely that some historians of speech act theory have proposed that Austin was aware, /via/ Ryle, of Reinach’s work. The connection between law and speech acts has engendered all sorts of difficulties and misunderstandings, especially with respect to the normativity of these acts and with respect to the existence of norms or rules grounding them (cf. Hart and Searle). My aim here is, first of all, to clarify the connection between speech acts, normativity, and law. This large question has often been taken up in order to make normative use of Austin’s theories, for example by Searle. It is therefore important to see what use can really be made of Austin’s work in the theory of norms. I will first approach this issue by examining the specific nature of the speech act in Austin. Reflection on law makes clear the variety of speech acts beyond the paradigmatic example of promising. It also shows what is truly at stake in Austin’s theory. Furthermore it alerts us to the full radicalism of Austin’s philosophy of language. In making performatives “social” acts determined by rules, Austin’s mainstream interpreters and inheritors neglect the properly linguistic dimension of Austin’s discovery. They also miss his critique of representationalism and of the very idea of states of affairs. Yet this critique is inseparable from his discovery of performatives. What is at stake, therefore, is the very idea of performance, that is to say, the very idea of agency, independently of all prior normativity and of any creation of a state of affairs or a social reality. -------------------------------------end of the announcement---------------------------

The meetings are held in Shonan Village Center (near Tokyo), which offers a combination of facilities for conferences, trainings, lodging in a resort-like setting. The friendly and open atmosphere is to promote a culture of communication and exchange among the meeting participants. The NII Shonan Meetings are managed by National Institute of Informatics (NII) in Japan. (2) Scope and Style NII Shonan Meetings follow the style of the Dagstuhl Seminars. A meeting usually lasts for four days (Monday to Thursday) or shorter. It is initiated by at most three organizers (one from Asia), established leaders in their field, representing different communities invited to the Seminar, preferably from different institutions. NII invites on their behalf about 25 to 35 researchers of international standing from academia and industry. Like Dagstuhl Seminars, an NII Shonan Meeting typically does not come with a fixed program. Instead, the pace and the program are guided by topics and presentations that evolve through discussions. In particular, NII does not require participants to submit a paper for presentation, or to give a presentation at all. On the contrary, NII encourages participants to present new ideas and work in progress. All administrative works of meetings are supported by the NII team in the preparation phase and during the seminars themselves, so that the organizers can focus on choosing research topics and selecting active researchers for the meeting. (3) Proposal Submissions NII invites international standing scientists to submit proposals for international meetings (with about 25-35 participants) on any topics of informatics. The proposal should clearly motivate the topic of your seminar and include the following items: - Meeting Title - Organizers (at most three, 1-page CV for each) - Proposed Dates for the Meeting - Description of the Meeting (1-2 pages, in English) - Invitation list (Position/First Name/Middle Name/Last Name/Affiliation/Email/Gender/URL/research list) The proposal should be submitted via the following EasyChair page: http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=nim1 The proposal will be reviewed by the Academic Committee. Diagrams involving points, lines and regions encode basic phenomena such as quantum measurement, entanglement creation, secret key preparation and encryption. Procedures such as quantum teleportation, quantum dense coding and encrypted communication can then be defined as equations between these diagrams, such that solutions to these equations in the correct 2-category correspond precisely to implementations of these algorithms in the ordinary sense. This work has many connections to other areas of mathematics and physics, such as topological quantum field theory, representation theory, and higher category theory, which I will briefly describe.
