Dear all, A series of introductory lectures on higher categories will be given online by Yuki Maehara, starting on 31 Jan (Mon), then every Mon and Thu, and finishing on 17 Feb (Thu), as per below. -- Title: A friendly introduction to ∞-categories Lecturer: Yuki Maehara (Kyushu U) Abstract: ∞-categories are to spaces what ordinary categories are to sets. This nicely summarises the basic idea of ∞-categories, but there is a large gap between this intuition and the definition(s) of ∞-category one finds in the literature. The aim of these lectures is to fill this gap by answering the following question: What do we really mean by "spaces", and what sort of things do we want to do with them? The 3rd International Workshop of User-Oriented Logic Paradigms (IULP) focuses on discussing different aspects involved in making logic paradigms more user-friendly/oriented, where the "user" could be either an expert of the paradigm, or a non-expert who simply uses tools developed for the paradigm in some application. IULP aims to bring together researchers working on different logic paradigms, such as answer set programming, constraint logic programming, probabilistic logic programming, abductive logic programming, inductive logic programming, argumentation, principles of teaching etc., as user- friendliness is an important topic in all of these areas. IULP aims to provide an international forum for researchers in the AI, KR, and applied sciences community to discuss and present advances in theories, formalisms, and applications to deliver the mature and well-defined methods of logic paradigms to a wider audience. We solicit the submission of papers broadly centred on issues and research related to user-friendliness in logic paradigms and related fields. Fully funded PhD student position in logic and formal methods, Barcelona (Spain), Deadline: 5 Sep 2019

The University of Barcelona offers a PhD position in collaboration with the Catalan industrial sector. The industrial component of the PhD revolves around the development and verification of legal software in Coq within Formal Vindications SL (http://formalvindications.com/). This work will be complemented with the formalization of parts of logic/mathematics. The group where this project will be embedded works on ordinal analysis via modal logic and reflection principles; we expect collaboration with the main group to arise, but we are open to alternative proposals. The PhD student will be part of a large and active research group. Currently, the group is lead by Joost J. Joosten and consists of three researchers who have over two years of experience with proof assistants, type-theory and pure and applied proof theory. There are three fellow PhD students working on related topics. Furthermore, the project counts with three junior scientific staff members, a senior Coq developer and a versatile programmer. The group is embedded into various research projects, including European, National and Regional funds. The general logic landscape of the Barcelona metropolitan area is rich and diverse and counts with groups and specialists in areas like algebraic logic, computability theory, formal linguistics, model theory, and set theory. We offer a three-year position in the PhD program in Mathematics and Computer Science which is located in the very center of Barcelona. If after three years the PhD has not been finished, but there is realistic expectations that it will be finished soon, the company will consider continuing the position in its major characteristics. Apart from the usual PhD trajectory, the candidates will participate in cutting edge formalization developments in an industrial setting. The travel allowances can exceed 2200€ per year and the gross salary varies between 18K and 22K per year depending on how much financial support this project receives from the Catalan authorities. We are looking for candidates with a background in theoretical computer science and/or mathematical logic. It is a strict requirement to have finished a relevant Master with an average undergraduate and master score of at least 6.5 out of 10. Apart from the required knowledge of Coq and Ocaml, other IT skills are recommended, especially knowledge/experience with other functional programming languages. Previous commercial work experience is a plus and working proficiency in English is a must. LAST CALL FOR PAPERS - DEON 2014 12th International Conference on Deontic logic and Normative Systems 12-15 July 2014, Ghent, Belgium http://www.deon2014.ugent.be [co-located with TiL 2014] The biennial DEON conferences are designed to promote interdisciplinary cooperation amongst scholars interested in linking the formal-logical study of normative concepts and normative systems with computer science, artificial intelligence, philosophy, organization theory and law. In addition to these general themes, DEON 2014 will encourage a special focus on the topic: Deontic modalities in natural language There have been eleven previous DEON conferences: Amsterdam, December 1991; Oslo, January 1994; Sesimbra, January 1996; Bologna, January 1998; Toulouse, January 2000; London, May 2002; Madeira, May 2004; Utrecht, July 2006, Luxembourg, July 2008, Fiesole July 2010, Bergen, July 2012. This DEON will be colocated with the 2014 edition of TiL (Trends in Logic), 8 July - 11 July, same venue: http://entiaetnomina.blogspot.be/p/trends-in-logic-xiv.html ------------ General Themes ------------ The Program Committee invites papers concerned with the following topics: • the logical study of normative reasoning, including formal systems of deontic logic, defeasible normative reasoning, logics of action, logics of time, and other related areas of logic • the formal analysis of normative concepts and normative systems • the formal specification of aspects of norm-governed multi-agent systems and autonomous agents, including (but not limited to) the representation of rights, authorization, delegation, power, responsibility and liability • the normative aspects of protocols for communication, negotiation and multi-agent decision making • the formal representation of legal knowledge • the formal specification of normative systems for the management of bureaucratic processes in public or private administration • applications of normative logic to the specification of database integrity constraints ----------- Special Theme ----------- DEON 2014’s special focus is “Deontic modalities in natural language”. Deontic or normative modality is a subject of common interest for researchers in several fields, including moral philosophy, meta-ethics, linguistic semantics, and deontic logic. Over the past, the deontic modalities have been extensively studied on the logic side. Comparatively, much less attention has been paid to them from a natural language perspective, at least in DEON. There has been a growing interest from linguists in the study of the deontic modalities, mostly in the US, under the influence of Angelika Kratzer’s work. A Deontic Modality Workshop was held in Los Angeles on May 20-22, 2013. We encourage submission of papers describing problems from a natural language perspective that can be a challenge for deontic logic. Topics of interest in this special theme include, but are not limited to: • Challenges from natural language for deontic logic • Relationship between deontic and other types of modality: epistemic modality, imperatives, supererogatory, etc • New insights on the deontic paradoxes • Modeling values • Game theoretic aspects of deontic reasoning • Emergence of norms • Norms from a conversational point of view • Norms and argumentation We welcome theoretical work (formal models, representations, logics, specifications, verification), implementation-oriented work (programming languages, design models, simulations, prototype systems) and empirically driven work (linguistics) on these specific topics. The paper should be in English, and should be no longer than 15 pages when formatted according the LNCS specifications. The first page should contain the full name and contact information for at least one of the authors, and it should contain an abstract of no more than ten lines. Authors should submit their papers electronically using easychair: https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=deon2014 Each submitted paper will be carefully peer-reviewed by a panel of PC member based on originality, significance, technical soundness, and clarity of exposition and relevance for the conference. For each accepted paper, at least one author is required to register for the conference and should plan to present the paper. Publication --------- Copies of the workshop proceedings will be provided to all participants. The proceedings will be published with Springer in their LNCS/LNAI series.
